The boy who was interested in science and comic books was drawn to art during his teens. He started taking watercolor classes in 1937 at the Parsons School of Design. His study of art was followed by taking classes at the Art Students League in 1940. During this time he got the opportunity to study with celebrated American realist painter Reginald Marsh. After graduating from the Franklin School for Boys, Manhattan in 1940, Lichtenstein attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. But the college studies were interrupted midway in the year 1943 as he was sent to Europe for World War II. After his wartime service Lichtenstein returned back to Ohio State to continue his undergraduate degree and pursue a master’s degree, both in fine arts. Lichtenstein extensively exhibited his works in numerous art galleries, nationwide during the late 1940s. The list would include galleries in Cleveland as well as in New York City. During the 1950s his references and motifs were taken from mythology and American history, paying homage to yester-era art, from eighteenth century through modern period. Lichtenstein began his experimentations with different subjects employing different methods and these newer works of him were a commentary on American popular culture which he created in reaction to the then success of Abstract Expressionist paintings by artists including Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. He never chose to paint abstract, and often subject-less canvases like those of Pollock’s and others. Lichtenstein would rather take his elements and motifs and create imageries taken y directly from comic books and advertising. He never chose to emphasize his painting process or even his own inner and emotional self, his life in his art, he would rather go ahead and mimic his borrowed sources.

This was his thought as he created the arts through an impersonal-looking stencil process. A process that somewhat imitated the mechanical repetitions of printing which was widely used for commercial art. Lichtenstein's most popular work during this phase of his life was "Whaam!," Lichtenstein grew to fame for his deadpan humor as well as his slyly subversive approaches towards creating a signature body of work which were all based on mass-reproduced images. His art gained popularity increasingly by the year with both collectors as well as influential art dealers like Leo Castelli, showing Lichtenstein's work at his own gallery for more than 30 years. Like many other aspects of Pop Art, this too provoked discussion over the ideas of originality, as well as consumerism, while also talking about the fine line between fine art and entertainment.
